12/26/2006 Freakin Weatherbug lied to meNow that Christmas is over, we can focus on the really important thing about this winter: we have been almost 3 years without a good snowstorm in the Charlotte area. I would hate living up north, where the snow comes in late October and lasts until May, but I love Charlotte snow. Charlotte snowstorms have the following pattern: - 3 days ahead of time, the weather says that there is a 20% chance of flurries, with little to no accumulation. - Everyone in Charlotte panics. The stores are emptied of beer and bread, people gas their generators, work basically stops. I usually turn Christmas music on at work, but no one cares because I am generally the only one there. - The snow starts. Schools are canceled, workplaces empty, and people drive home through the flurries. Of course, no one slows down. - If any accumulation happens, every moron with a 4 wheel drive drives around looking for an excuse to do donuts in other people's yards. I always take MY 4WD vehicle out "to get supplies" with Alex, my 6 year old son. We go to the local starbucks and get a hot chocolate or something. One of things I love about Alex is that he is always up for an adventure. - Since no one goes to school or work, we all go outside and try to make a snowman out of the accumulation. It generally takes 3 or 4 of my neighbors front yards to make a snowman. - The next day, the sun comes out, and the temperature rises to 60 degrees. The snow is gone by 2:00 in the afternoon. Anyway, back to Weatherbug. I love Weatherbug...I pay for a subscription and everything. Today, the forecast for tonight said: "Mostly cloudy with patchy sprinkles or a brief snow flurry possible early...then decreasing cloudiness. Lows in the lower 30s. West winds 5 to 10 mph." Of course, as soon as I saw that, I went outside and did the Indian snow dance, but nothing happened. Dammit.
